Welcome to The Canvas Within
Mel's Art Therapy Experience

At The Canvas Within, art therapy offers a compassionate and creative space to explore who we are at our core and reconnect with the parts of ourselves that may have become hidden beneath life's expectations, roles, and experiences.Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process to deepen self-awareness, support healing, and encourage personal growth. The images we create can reveal insights that are often difficult to access through words alone. By bringing our inner experiences into a visible form, we are able to observe aspects of ourselves from a different perspective.Through this process, clients can begin to uncover unconscious thoughts, feelings, beliefs, grief, and experiences that may be held within both the body and mind. The artwork becomes a bridge to hidden or unspoken aspects of the self, allowing emotions to surface, be acknowledged with compassion, understood, and gradually reintegrated into one's life story. As we gain insight into these deeper layers of ourselves, we can better understand the patterns, emotions, and behaviours that shape how we move through the world. Art therapy helps us explore who we are beneath the layers and reconnect with our authentic self.

I offer:

  • Individual Art Therapy - supporting self-discovery, healing, and personal growth.

  • Couples & Family Art Therapy - fostering communication, understanding, and deeper connection.

  • Group Art Therapy - creating opportunities for shared experience, belonging, and connection.

  • Embodied Expression - a unique experience combining bodywork, guided visualisation, and art therapy to help you connect with the wisdom of the body, access deeper inner awareness, and express what emerges through the creative process.

I also facilitate workshops for retreats, wellness events, community gatherings, workplaces, and private groups, creating tailored experiences that invite reflection, authentic expression, and meaningful connection. I welcome opportunities to develop new groups and offerings in response to the interests and needs of the community. The Canvas Within – Mel's Art Therapy Experience is an invitation to uncover your truth, honour your experiences, and express your authentic self—allowing the world to see who you truly are.

Where body, art, and truth meet.

Mel was a guest facilitator at our retreat in the Byron Bay hinterland, leading our participants through an exercise that was deeply moving on many levels. I witnessed some truly profound breakthroughs as a result of her process. What I loved most was how Mel held the space for people to reach their own realisations. She encouraged the women not to discard their initial ideas even when they felt they’d made a 'mistake.' She allowed them the space to feel through the discomfort and find the breakthrough revealed within that moment. Mel is a skilled practitioner and her art therapy experience was a profound addition to our retreat. I highly recommend her work.

Individual Art Therapy Sessions

Individual art therapy sessions provide a safe and supportive space to explore emotions, experiences, and patterns that may be influencing your life. Through the creative process, thoughts, feelings, and unconscious material can emerge in the images you create, offering valuable insight into your inner world.Art therapy can support people experiencing grief, trauma, anxiety, life transitions, emotional overwhelm, or a desire for greater self-understanding. Together, we explore the artwork through reflection and discussion, uncovering the personal meaning and messages held within the image. This process often helps clients gain new perspectives on their experiences and their relationship with themselves and the world around them.

As we work together over time, each session builds upon the insights of the last, allowing for deeper exploration and growth. Depending on your needs, art therapy may help you:

  • Explore grief, trauma, emotions, and life challenges in a safe and creative way

  • Gain insight into unconscious patterns that may be influencing thoughts, feelings, and behaviours

  • Discover early childhood strengths, memories, and resources that can be drawn upon during difficult times

  • Reframe limiting beliefs and life scripts, creating new possibilities for the future

  • Identify goals, navigate obstacles, and build resilience

  • Increase self-awareness, self-compassion, and emotional wellbeing

  • Engage in creative processes such as Neurographic Art that can support new perspectives and positive change

I believe that each person holds their own inner wisdom. My role is to support and guide you as you uncover the insights, strengths, and resources that already exist within you.

Through creativity, reflection, and self-discovery, art therapy can help you reconnect with yourself and show the world who you truly are.

I had a one on one session with Mel last week which was incredibly powerful, totally unexpected and incredibly healing. It was my first art therapy session and I was blown away. Love this newly discovered mode of therapy. It was a very rich experience and Mel’s holding and facilitation was amazing. Looking forward to taking the next step. Thanks beautiful Mel.

Group Art Therapy Sessions

Group art therapy provides a safe, supportive, and welcoming space to connect with yourself and others through creativity. These sessions offer an opportunity to explore your inner world, gain insight into your thoughts and feelings, and express yourself in a way that words alone often cannot. One of the unique benefits of group art therapy is the sense of connection it can create. While every person's experience is different, participants often discover shared feelings, challenges, and experiences within the group. This can reduce feelings of isolation, foster a sense of belonging, and remind us that we are not alone in our struggles. Through creative exploration and group reflection, meaningful connections can naturally develop in a respectful and supportive environment. No artistic experience is necessary—only a willingness to be curious and open to the process.

Well Mel congratulations I got way more out of that session than I could have imagined and have told my family about the picture and they were blown away about how you can draw your emotions. I will be spreading the word about how amazing you are.

Couples & Family Art Therapy Sessions

Couples and family art therapy provides a creative and supportive space to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and gain a deeper understanding of one another. Through art-making, participants can explore patterns, emotions, and experiences in a way that encourages reflection, curiosity, and meaningful conversation.

Colour Interaction – Understanding Relationship Dynamics

Colour Interaction is a powerful art therapy activity that explores the roles we play within our relationships, families, workplaces, and wider communities. Through the use of colour and creative expression, participants gain insight into how they respond to connection, communication, and conflict. The process helps uncover the stories, experiences, and beliefs that shape our responses and behaviours, allowing participants to better understand themselves and others. By exploring why each person responds the way they do, greater empathy, compassion, and understanding can develop, creating opportunities for healthier and more authentic relationships.

Shared Creative Projects

Shared creative projects invite couples and family members to create together, encouraging communication, cooperation, and connection in a relaxed and supportive environment. Activities may include collaborative clay work, a family mural created by all members, or an abstract family drawing that explores how each person experiences and relates to the family system. These creative experiences can reveal relationship dynamics, individual strengths, communication styles, and shared values while providing opportunities to listen, collaborate, and gain a deeper appreciation of one another's perspectives.

Through creativity, families and couples can build stronger connections, foster understanding, and create new ways of relating to one another.

Our family session with Mel was really fascinating. We worked on an abstract piece together that showed up some family dynamics and helped us see the roles we play in each other’s lives. Would highly recommend for couples or families interested in seeing and resolving patterns.

Embodied Expression: Art Therapy & Bodywork

A 3-hour immersive experience where self-expression becomes transformation

Embodied Expression combines bodywork and art therapy to create a unique opportunity to connect with your body, emotions, intuition, and inner wisdom. This holistic experience invites you to slow down, listen deeply, and explore what is ready to emerge through both body and creativity.

The session begins with a guided visualisation during a bodywork treatment, focusing on a current issue, challenge, or area of your life that you would like to explore. As the body relaxes, thoughts, emotions, memories, sensations, and insights can begin to surface, creating space for deeper awareness and understanding.Following the bodywork session, you will be invited to create an image that reflects your experience. No artistic skill is required. The artwork becomes a bridge between the unconscious and conscious mind, allowing what has been felt, sensed, or discovered to be expressed visually. The final stage of the session is an art therapy process where we explore the image together. Through reflection and discussion, we uncover the meaning, insights, strengths, and possibilities contained within the artwork, supporting greater self-awareness and personal growth.

Express your authentic self through both body and creativity.Where body, art, and truth meet.Self-expression becomes transformation when we allow ourselves to listen to the wisdom within.

Embodied Expression offers a powerful opportunity to connect with yourself on a deeper level, integrating body, mind, emotions, and creativity into one therapeutic experience.

Mel’s Art Therapy session opened deep and rich insight for each individual and the group connection as a whole. For myself it was affirming, explorative and joyful, thank you Mel. I highly recommend Mel for any retreats, workshops or events. She is a master at holding space for other’s awakenings.

About Mel

I grew up in Sydney, but my heart has always been in Byron Bay. My family owned a farm in Bangalow from the time I was five, and I moved to the Northern Rivers shortly after leaving school. Although I still love to travel and explore the world, this region has always been the place I return to.My life and career have always been centred around people and community. Over the years, I have worked across event coordination, hospitality, disability support, youth services, bodywork, community philanthropy, and now art therapy. Each experience has strengthened my belief in the importance of connection, self-expression, and creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued. When I was introduced to art therapy, I knew I had found the work I was meant to do. I was immediately drawn to its ability to combine creativity with deep personal insight and healing. Art therapy offers a powerful way to explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences beyond words, helping people connect more deeply with themselves. At The Canvas Within, I provide a warm, compassionate, and supportive space where clients can slow down, reflect, and explore their inner world through creativity. I believe that each person holds their own wisdom, and that the creative process can help uncover new perspectives, build self-awareness, and support meaningful change. My passion is helping people reconnect with who they truly are beneath the expectations, roles, and stories they have carried throughout life—so they can live more authentically and show the world who they truly are.Looking ahead, I hope to bring together my love of travel, creativity, and community through workshops and art therapy retreats both in Australia and around the world.
